EMDR: could it help me?
Let’s consider if it’s right for you. EMDR can ease distress following trauma, from prolonged grief, anxiety, sleep issues, addictions, low self-esteem, and OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), helping you feel more in control without erasing memories.

Do you find yourself…
Feeling overwhelmed?
Something has left you flooded with emotion, unable to carry on with everyday life. There’s not enough room in your head to function as you need to, you’re losing sleep, and every little thing makes you jump.
Unable to control your emotions?
You can’t calm yourself, and you keep on being reminded of what happened. You’ve tried talking about it, but that hasn’t helped you to control worries.
Feeling anxious?
Life events have left you with low confidence, social situations are hard, exams or work are stressful, and you can’t see a way out of it.
What is EMDR?
Eye movement, desensitisation and reprocessing. Trauma is held in the body, with events often represented by an image, sound, or a combination of senses. Using the senses, I take you safely through your mind’s representations of the trauma, whilst using bilateral stimulation (one side then the other), as if viewing your mind’s processing of the trauma event through a train window.

Does it work?
Using your brain’s natural sorting system, EMDR uses the same sort of imagery activated in REM sleep to calm you, letting go of old trauma. I’ve seen a bereaved parent able to sleep through for the first time in months; a young person able to take exams with confidence; a young man with a phobia of vomiting able to comfort his sick friend in five sessions. It often works more quickly than other forms of therapy, and people will generally notice a change after their first session following assessment, often finding significant improvement within six sessions.

What will happen in a session?
Bilateral stimulation (one way and then the other), at the same time as being led through the imagery of what is troubling you. You don’t know where it will lead you, but it’s your brain that is in control. There are different ways to do it; eye movement, following my fingers; you gently squeezing your own shoulders – butterfly hugs; handheld buzzers that vibrate (like your mobile). If these ways don’t suit you, there are others.
Find out how EMDR might support you by booking a free 20-minute consultation at Nature’s Larder, in Ivybridge, or online, by arrangement. This lets you find what form works for you, it gives me some details about what you would like to change, and to make a judgement about whether I, and EMDR, are right for you. Trust and engagement predict success, and this must be earned. I can give you a taste of how EMDR might help you before we meet for a full assessment, and to plan treatment.
Let me listen. From there, I can offer you a way forward.

I can’t thank you enough for the EMDR sessions. I don’t think I could have carried on, the way I was feeling before. I like listening to his voice now, and I couldn’t before. I can feel him and hear what he’d say to me when I’m struggling. I can now think about the son I love, not just the tragic way he died.
What my clients say
I experienced high anxiety and panic attacks whilst taking my exams at school. Through the use of EMDR James was able provide me with strategies that I could use to help me relax, allowing me to feel calmer more focused and in control. Not only did this help me through my exams, it has also provided me with tools to manage my GAD. I would strongly recommend sessions with James if you wish to control your anxiety, rather than the anxiety controlling you.
I would recommend anyone trying EMDR to help overcome their phobias. I hadn’t heard of EMDR before but someone recommended I try it to help overcome my phobia of birds. James was great, very understanding and clearly explained the process. Within a few sessions I started to feel differently and James gave me several techniques to use to help control my fear.
